Latvia Becomes Eurozone's 18th Member

RIGA, Jan 1 (LETA) - Latvia adopted the euro last night, becoming the 18th eurozone member state.

The euro replaced the lat according to the official exchange rate of EUR 1 per LVL 0.702804 or 70.3 santims. All money deposited in banks, as well as loans in lats issued to residents and companies, was automatically converted to euros according to the official exchange rate.

Starting January, salaries, pensions and benefits will be paid in the euro currency.

In the first two weeks of 2014, both currencies will be circulated; the change in almost all cash transactions will be given in euro with the exception of public transport, where passengers who pay for tickets in lats will be issued change in lats also, those who pay for tickets with euros will be issued change in euros. Residents are recommended to use bankcards or give precise cash during this period. The lat will cease to be legal tender on January 15.

Så er det blevet tid til igen at sætte kryds i kalenderen til den traditionsrige "Dansker Julefrokost" i Cesis.

I år bliver det den 7. December at vi alle skal mødes på det gamle hotel til dansk julemad og hygge. Som altid vil der blive noget for store og små, så giv bare barnepigen fri og tag ungerne med. Ja, barnepigen må selvfølgelig også godt komme med!
Release of the Photobook VEINS - September 11, 2013

The Nordic Council of Ministers' Office in Latvia, the Danish Cultural Institute in Riga and the Art Academy of Latvia request the pleasure of Your company at the international release of the photobook VEINS by Anders Petersen (SE) and Jacob Aue Sobol (DK) published by Dewi Lewis Publishing (UK).

The event takes place on Wednesday, September 11, 2013, at 17:30, at the Art Academy of Latvia, Kalpaka bulv. 13 where you also will be able to see the photo exhibition VEINS.

Both photographers will be present at the release and for signing of the book, which will be sold at a special release price.
Nordic Photographers Exhibit in Riga

Until 12 September, the Latvian capital of Riga will for the first time host an exhibition by internationally acclaimed photographers Anders Petersén (Sweden) and Jacob Aue Sobol (Denmark). The exhibition called „Veins” will be displayed at the Latvian Academy of Art.
Alongside the exhibition the photographers will also hold artist talks, as planned by the organisers – the Nordic Council of Ministers’ Office in Latvia and the Danish Cultural Institute in Latvia.
The Swedish photographer and a living legend Anders Petersen (1944) is known for his ability to find a common language with complete strangers, thus creating intimate, distinct human portraits.

About his creative work Petersen says: “The stuff I do is a kind of private documentary photography. It is a real challenge – to be present, but maintain the distance.”

Conference "Business Integrity in the Baltic Sea Region"

A conference on Business Integrity in the Baltic Sea Region on 14 February 2013 at Riga Business School, Skolas 11.

The conference is drawing together the most important business transparency initiatives in Latvia and region wide.

The conference will present Corporate Transparency Index by Transparency International and Swedish National report. The minister of Economy of Latvia Daniels Pavļuts will put forward the pivotal points for improving accountability of state and municipal owned enterprises.

Also, during the conference, the main business organizations of Latvia will present the reform agenda to the government of Latvia regarding integrity of the business environment. Corporate business leaders will present their cases of positive change and discuss challenges of putting business integrity into practice.

The Danish investors in Latvia are invited to meet Edmunds Sprūdžs, the Minister for the Environmental Protection and Regional Development. The meeting - business lunch will take place on January 11, 2013 in Jelgava. The Minister is interested to hear about problems Danish investors are having here in Latvia and willing to see how it could be helped.
